Feng Shui Recorded in Tang Dynasty
The Chinese have a saying, “First, destiny; second, luck; third, feng shui; fourth, virtues; fifth, education”. Feng shui teaches us how to create balance and harmony around us. Feng shui can be a powerful force in shaping people’s lives but it is not a cure for all ills.
What, exactly, is Feng Shui? Feng shui (pronounced “fung shway”) is an ancient science and art developed over 3,000 years ago in China. It is also referred to as “Geomancy” or “Earth Wisdom”. The word ‘feng’ means ‘wind’ and ‘shui’ means ‘water’, although it is just a name but wind and water are considered as important elements in feng shui. According to the book of burial by Guo Phu;
“Chi rides the wind (feng in Chinese) and scatters, but is retained when encountering water (shui)”
Feng shui is a complex body of knowledge that teaches us how to balance the energies of any given space so that health and good fortune can be obtained for people inhabiting it. It is the art of placing and arranging space and matter in the correct manner so that harmony with the environment can be achieved.
This harmony can refer to harmony in the home, in wealth, in relationship and many other aspects in your lives. Chinese believed that all buildings were affected by their surroundings of mountains, hills, valleys, water and so on. In feng shui, a home or building were considered lucky and blessed when they are placed in the most auspicious surroundings. Your home position in relation to its surroundings has an affect on your health, wealth, luck and relationships. According to feng shui, when you change the surroundings, you also change your life.
Feng shui has taken on many schools of though thruogh the years using philosophy, religion, architecture, math, numerology, astrology, superstition, symbolism and many more aspects of various cultures throughout the centuries.
A site with revitalizing energy will be beneficial and healthy while a site with bad or harmful energy is damaging to those who live on it. Feng shui enables you to position yourself within your environment to your best advantage. The positioning of your offices and houses as well as their internal design affects each of you positively or negatively. It helps you to determine the most favourable positions for you and the layouts, designs and colors which will support you.
Feng shui is still practiced in China and many other parts of the world up to this day. It can be very complicated if you dont know how because you will need to consider many different aspects in order to determine whether what you are going to change or arrange will give you positive or negative effect. Feng shui may causes you more harm if you use it incorrectly.
The theories of Yin Yang, Chinese five elements as well as zodiac animal signs are some of the basic knowledge you need to know and understand before practicing feng shui. You may be interested to know that the earliest Chinese feng shui was more concerned with the auspiciuos orientations of the tombs of the dead rather tthan the homes of the living. They believed that a good burial site will bring prosperity and peace to the descendants of the deceased.
When you go to feng shui consultant or geomancer, he or she will decide on the appropriatenes of the position of the objects and spaces based on those elements. Not all objects can be shifted of course, and in this case, feng shui can be enhanced by displaying or placing a bagua or a crystal at the appropriate place in order to deflect, block or slow down the energies passing through the areas. Many people consult astrologers annually so that every activity within each year can be pinpointed accurately and undertakenn at an auspicious time.
Feng Shui Compass
When China was under imperial rule, feng shui was a highly guarded secret, known only to a handful of scientists and astronomers commissioned with maintaining the wealth, health and power of the court. Feng shui masters were forbidden to release this potentially powerful knowledge to outsiders. At this time, the public was not know and aware about the existence of feng shui. Strict criteria applied to those who wish to be an apprentice for the science and art of feng shui. Feng shui masters / consultants and their families were punished or even killed if they stole the guarded secret of feng shui. Most feng shui teachings were done verbally – oftten manifested in the form of poems students had to memorize.
During the Yellow Bandits Rebellion in 907 BC, an astronomer and the emperor’s meteorologist fled the Imperial Palace. He hid out in the mountains in the northwest region of Ciang Sze Province and started to help the poor with his feng shui knowledge he took from the palace. He then changed his name to “Save The Poor” and therefore people remembered him for making the commoners aware of the long kept important secret of Feng Shui.
